Bulldogs take series from Alcorn; wrap up playoff spot

LORMAN, Miss. -- The Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the third inning Sunday in a 13-3 win over Alcorn State.

The win, combined with Mississippi Valley State's loss to Alabama State, clinched a spot in the SWAC Tournament for the Bulldogs.

MVSU falls to 4-17 in the SWAC. The Bulldogs won the season series 4-2 over the Delta Devils and hold the tiebreaker.

A&M, 7-11 SWAC, is just two games behind third-place Jackson State (8-8), who played UT-Martin in a non-conference series.

The Bulldogs and Tigers will play a three-game series this weekend at JSU.

For A&M on Sunday, Ty Russell was 3-for-3 with a double and four runs batted in. Brandon Marsonek (4-8) pitched his third complete game of the season, scattering 12 hits and striking out 5.

A&M took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Carlton Peppers, who was hit by a pitch, scored on Tanner Ivey's single. One out later, Ivey scored when Saige Benson singled to centerfield.

In the third inning, Ty Russell made the score 4-0 with a two-run single. A bases-loaded walk to J.T. O'Reel, an RBI single by Peppers and a bases-loaded walk to Ivey ran the score to 7-0.

After Alcorn answered with a run in the bottom half of the third, Russell hit a two-run double and also scored in a three-run fourth inning for A&M to put the game out of reach.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs took a 12-1 lead on Darren White's RBI double and another bases-loaded walk to O'Reel. For the shortstop it was his second RBI of the game without a hit; on Saturday, he had three RBIs while going 0 for 2.

Nolan Ramsey's RBI single in the ninth brought in Peppers with A&M's final run of the game.
