Softball Splits Doubleheader at Jackson State

JACKSON, M.S.--- In Sunday's doubleheader against Jackson State University to open a three-game SouthWestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series, the  Alabama A&M softball team earned a 7-4 win in the day's opening contest  before falling 10-9 in game 2 at Jackson State.

In the Opener, Imani Largin walked at the top of the first inning, and advanced to second after a bunt single from Kia Lang. Viridiana Ramos followed and gave the Lady Bulldogs a quick 3-0 lead with a three-run homer  to score Lang and Largin.

A&M scored its final four runs of the game in the top of the third inning. After Lang walked and Tiana Sanders singled to left field, Brandi Foreman hit her first homer of the season to drive in Lang and Sanders. Ariel Smith helped the Lady Bulldogs take a 7-0 lead after scoring on a throwing error. Caitlyn Hayden tossed a complete game in the 7-4 victory, allowing just four earned runs while striking out three.  

In game two, the Lady Bulldogs came out strong offensively in the top of the second and third to take a 6-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Sanders added another run for the Lady Bulldogs with her ninth home run of the season. In the top of the sixth inning, Ramos scored when Foreman singled to center field, and Smith followed with a fielder's choice to score Sanders.

A&M took a 9-1 lead; However, Jackson State responded in the bottom of the sixth inning by adding two runs. In the top of the seventh, Lang added one hit for the Lady Bulldogs with a single to left field, but A&M were held scoreless in the final inning as the Lady Tigers took the 10-9 victory.

Alabama A&M and Jackson State close the three-game SWAC series with a 11 a.m. rubber match on Monday in Jackson, M.S.
