Lady Bulldogs Clinches SWAC Tournament Berth with Win Over Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE, AL---The Alabama A&M softball team upset No. 1 ranked Alabama State University Friday Afternoon by a score of 7-6 in game one of the three-game series. The victory clinched the Lady Bulldogs a berth in next week's SouthWestern Athletic Conference softball tournament in Irondale, AL.

Alabama State started out on a strong note in game one scoring four early runs in the first two innings. Tiana Sanders responded and placed A&M on the board in the bottom of the second with her 11th homer of the season to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Lady Bulldogs offense exploded for four runs in the third inning off of five hits. Janae Adams and Kia Lang each started off the inning with singles, and Viridiana Ramos drove in the two with a deep double to left field. Following, Ariel Smith drove in two more with a bases loaded single to center field to tie an exciting game 5-5.

Imani Largin helped A&M take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a one-run homer to left field, and Caitlyn Hayden, who pitched a complete-game, held the lady hornets scoreless in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the bases were loaded when Sierra Smith singled to right field to drive in Brandi Foreman for what would be the Lady Bulldogs winning run. Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning, and Hayden only allowed Alabama State two hits in the top of the seventh to secure the 7-6 win.

A&M (10-32, 8-8 SWAC) was led by Sanders in the opening game of the series, with two hits and two runs.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
