Softball Splits Doubleheader with Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE, AL--- The Alabama A&M softball team split its doubleheader with Alabama State on Saturday afternoon to close out the three-game series.

The Lady Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of eighth to secure a 7-6 eight-inning victory in game one before falling short in their second game to the Lady Hornets, 9-7.

"It was a good series win for the program," head coach Nakeya Hall said. Alabama State hadn't lost a series in the conference thus far, so these wins give us great momentum going into the conference championship.

Game One (AAMU 7, ASU 6)
A&M came out swinging from the start of the first game as they took an early 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the Lady Hornets five errors of the game including two in the first.

Tiana Sanders added another run for A&M at the bottom of the second inning with a double to center field to score Viridiana Ramos. Following, Desiree Taylor scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 6-1.

After Rachel Sanders held ASU scoreless in the second and third innings, they responded with four runs in the top of the fourth and a homer in the top of the fifth to tie the game 6-6.

Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning, and the game was extended to eight. Caitlyn Hayden retired the hornets quickly in the eighth inning with one strike out and two flies to center field.

Imani Largin doubled to right center to score Sierra Smith to secure the 7-6 victory.

Game Two (ASU 9, AAMU 7)
Lauren Walker and Ariel Smith both singled to right field in the first inning to help A&M take an early 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, ASU took a 4-3 lead, but Ariel Smith answered with a homer in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The Lady Bulldogs fell behind 9-4 heading into the sixth inning, but Tiana Sanders three-run homer cut the deficit to 9-7.

Although the Lady Bulldogs battled to regain the lead in the sixth inning, the game was called due to lightening at the end of the sixth and ASU walked away with the 9-7 victory.

"I'm proud of the way the team played and fought all weekend," said Hall. "It was a total team effort and if we can continue to play as such, we will do well in the playoffs."

The Lady Bulldogs are now looking to prepare for the SouthWestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament which will take place May 11-May 14 in Irondale, AL.
