Bulldogs rally in split of DH at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. -- Carlton Peppers drove in four runs and Josh Burchell pitched a complete game to lift the Bulldogs to a 6-3 come-from-behind win in game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday at Jackson State.

The Tigers won the nightcap 14-4 for a split of the twinbill. Both games were seven-inning contests.

Ty Russell had three home runs in the doubleheader and his home run Friday gave him four in the series.

Trailing 3-0 in Saturday's opener, the Bulldogs got on the board with Russell's solo home run in the fifth inning.

The comeback then started in the sixth inning with Eugene Freeman's leadoff double. J.T. O'Reel reached base on an error. Another JSU error allowed Peppers to reach base, advancing to second, and driving in Freeman and O'Reel to tie the game. Peppers then scored the go-ahead run one out later on Nolan Ramsey's single.

The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the seventh when Darren White led off with a double. Freeman then singled, moving White to third. With one out, Peppers singled to center to bring home White and Freeman for the final runs of the game.

After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Burchell pitched shutout ball for the rest of the game, striking out four and scattering nine hits.

Game 2: JSU 14, A&M 4 (7 innings)

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap when Tanner Ivey singled to drive in O'Reel and Ryan Thrasher in the third inning.

After the Tigers rallied for a 4-2 lead with a four-run third, Russell homered in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3.

But JSU scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to wrap up the game.

Russell hit another solo home run in the top of the sixth for the final Bulldog score.

Russell was 2-for-3 in the nightcap and has five home runs on the season.
