Bulldogs drop tourney opener to top-seed UAPB

NEW ORLEANS -- The Bulldogs struck early but Arkansas-Pine Bluff struck more in posting a 16-6 win Wednesday over Alabama A&M in the first round of the Southwestern  Athletic Conference baseball tournament.

With the loss, the Bulldogs face Jackson State at 9 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game. The game will be carried over the SWAC Digital Radio Network at  swac.org.

Cornelius Woods hit a three-run home run for the Bulldogs; Carlton Peppers had a three-hit game, including a double and triple, and he scored a run and drove in another run; and Tanner Ivey doubled and singled with an RBI and a run scored..

Ivey got the Bulldogs off and running with his two-out double in the first inning. After Nolan Ramsey walked, Woods drove the ball over the centerfield fence for a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Lions scored a run in the bottom of the first to cut A&M's lead to 3-1. Then, after the Bulldogs failed to score in the second, UAPB scored six runs on five hits to take a 7-3 lead.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the top of the third when Peppers led off with a triple and scored on Ivey's groundout RBI.

But UAPB essentially put the game away in the bottom of the third with five more runs, chasing A&M starter Brandon Marsonek for a 12-4 lead.

Dylan Payne walked and eventually scored on a Eugene Freeman ground out as A&M made the score 12-5 in the top of the fourth inning.

While reliever Caleb Roberts blanked UAPB in the fourth and fifth innings, the Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth on Peppers' RBI single that brought Darren White home.

UAPB, though, wrapped up the scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and a run in the seventh for a 16-6 run-rule win.
