Alabama State holds off Bulldogs

MONTGOMERY -- The Bulldogs made it thrilling at the end of Saturday's game at Alabama State.

Trailing 7-3 with two outs in the ninth, A&M wouldn't go quietly. Carlton Peppers laced a single to right. Then, Tanner Ivey was hit by a pitch and Nolan Ramsey was walked to load the bases, bringing up Dylan Payne.

What was unusual about this was the Bulldogs put on the rally against Angel Alicea, who had struck out six straight batters in putting the A&M hitters down when he came on in relief in the sixth inning.

However, he closed the door when he got Payne to strike out swinging and end the game.

The Bulldogs got two runs in the second inning on Ty Russell's seventh home run of the year and a fielder's choice run batted in by Peppers to score Darren White.

But the Hornets' Dylan Cooper provided the winning margin with a grand slam in the bottom of the inning off A&M starter Josh Burchell.

A&M had a rally cut short in the third inning. Nolan Ramsey opened the inning with a single and he moved to third on Payne's double down the right-field line.

Cornelius Woods singled to bring home Ramsey but that was all the scoring for the Bulldogs, who wound up with 11 men left on base in the game, including two in scoring position in the third inning.

Ramsey had three hits, including his double, to lead the Bulldogs while J.T. O'Reel had a pair of singles.

The Bulldogs and Hornets wrap up their SWAC schedule Sunday with a 1 p.m. start in Montgomery.
