AAMU Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match to Stetson

ASHEVILLE, N.C. --- Alabama A&M volleyball  dropped their first match of the UNC Asheville Invitational Friday afternoon against Stetson University 3-0 by scores of  25-23, 25-16, and 25-21.

Senior Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded 12 kills while Junior Courtney Oliver (Detroit, Mich.) tallied six kills, three blocks, and one service ace. Sophomore Rebecca Pierce (French Lick, Ind.) added 14 assists and six digs.

Junior Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) contributed eight assists and Freshman Nina Biggs (Houston, Tex.) helped the Lady Bulldogs out with 10 digs and four assists.  

The Lady Bulldogs and the Hatters battled over the course of the first set with Stetson taking a 25-23 win. A&M opened with leads of 12-10 and 14-12 before the Hatters used a 8-4 run to pull ahead 20-18. AAMU won 4-6 points to tie the set at 22 before Stetson pulled out the set win.

In the second set, AAMU opened up with a 2-1 lead before the Hatters took a 10-6 lead. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 5-1 streak to tie the game at 11. However, Stetson put together a 14-5 run to clinch the set.

Despite being down 2-0, AAMU refused to quit. In the third set, A&M outhit Stetson combining for a .148 hitting percentage while the Hatters hit .114 in the set. After being down 16-10, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 16. They later tied the game again at 20 and took a 22-20 lead. Stetson then put together a 4-0 run to clinch the match in three sets.

The Lady Bulldogs will continue play Saturday with the first match at 10 a.m. against North Carolina Central University and then close out the tournament against the host UNC Asheville at 5 p.m.
