Lady Bulldogs Fall 52-37 Against Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE—The Alabama A&M women's basketball team was upended by the Alabama State Lady Hornets on Saturday afternoon in the rival match at T.M. Elmore Gym.

A&M was led by junior Hilary Williams who scored 11 points. Senior Ebony Johnson and freshman Jameica Cobb each had six points. Johnson and freshman Juliette Akinwole led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounds with four each.

The Lady Hornets came out firing against the Lady Bulldogs and jumped out to an early  11-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Freshman Lauren McKee's three-pointer with 5:02 on the clock cut ASU's lead to five. However, the Lady Hornets answered back and went on an 11-6 run to finish with a score of 22-12 to close the first quarter.

In the second quarter, freshman Courtney Eggleston had four of the six points for A&M along with Cobb's two. Alabama State added five points to extend their lead to nine and the Lady Hornets headed into halftime a 27-18 lead.

Although both teams struggled in the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs fought their way back into the game during the early minutes of the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run to cut the Lady Hornet's 15 point lead to 10. However, ASU was able to extend their lead back to 15 points in the remaining minutes of the game to secure the win. The game finished with a score of 52-37.

"My future desires for the team is that they compete and play hard for 40 minutes and never let opposing teams out rebound us by 20 plus," Coach Richards said.

The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs' record to 2-12, 0-5 SWAC, while Alabama State improves to 5-10, 4-1 SWAC.

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday when they host Southern Jaguars at 4 p.m.
