WBB Falls to Southern, 66-54

HUNTSVILLE--- Freshman Jameica Cobb recorded her 12th double-figure game of the season with 18 points but it wasn't enough as the Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell to Southern 66-54 Saturday night in the T.M. Elmore Gym.

Senior Ebony Johnson also scored in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs (2-13, 0-6 SWAC) with 14 points, while Freshman Lauren McKee added 12 points. Cobb led A&M with seven rebounds followed by Johnson's six. Junior Hilary Williams led the team with six assists and contributed six rebounds.

A&M shot 36.8 percent to a Southern 47.5 percent, but the Lady Bulldogs sank 10-of-19 free throws to shoot 55.6 percent, while the Jaguars were 6-of-13.
"We played tough and I was very excited about that," Head Coach Margaret Richards said. "We are making positive steps in the right direction."

The Lady Bulldogs and Jaguars battled in the first quarter exchanging baskets the entire quarter. Southern led by as many as four midway through the quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-12 lead with 2:58 remaining.  With 37 seconds remaining in the frame, two jumpers by Southern put the Jaguars ahead, 16-13.

A&M committed four fouls and four turnovers in the second quarter, and the Jaguars took advantage of the mistakes and answered by extending their lead to seven, heading into the half up 34-27.

Courtney Eggleston opened the third quarter with layup before Southern powered a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 16 points.  The Jaguars went up by as many as 17 points before two layups by Cobb to cut Southern's lead to 13. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 49-36 heading in to the final quarter.

Southern opened the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run.  A three-pointer by McKee with 8:17 remaining in the game was the start of the Lady Bulldogs 12-5 run. McKee sank another three-pointer with 3:09 on the clock to cut the Jaguars lead to 10, 60-50. Unfortunately, the late comeback fell short as Southern's 6-2 run in the remaining minutes of the game secured a Jaguar's 66-54 victory.
