Lady Bulldogs Drop 73-57 Decision to Alcorn

HUNTSVILLE -- The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team closed out its three-game home stand Monday with a 73-57 loss to Alcorn State Lady Braves at the T.M. Elmore Gym. The Lady Bulldogs are 2-14 overall and the Lady Braves improve to 5-14 on the year.

Senior Ebony Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and contributed five rebounds. Junior Hilary Williams (Moultrie, Ga.) added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, while freshman Lauren McKee (Mobile, Ala.) posted ten points.
She was 3-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from the three-point line.

Freshman Jameica Cobb (Greenville, Fla.) scored eight points and five rebounds, while freshman Juliette Akinwole (Dallas, Tex.) led the team with seven rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 12-5 start and were 6-of-14 from the field in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs were leading 16-13 with one minute remaining in the quarter before the Lady Braves tied at 16 to end the frame.

"I feel like we started off very well and played with lots of energy," Coach Margaret Richards. "In the second half, we got side tracked and let Alcorn's pressure speed us up and we started to play out of character."

The second frame saw the Lady Bulldogs play Alcorn point-for-point making 41 percent of their shots (5-of-12) from the field. A&M saw scoring from four different players in the second quarter, cutting  the Lady Braves lead to two points, 28-26, with 3:33 to play in the stanza on a jumper from freshman Alisha Davis (Decatur, Ala.). Alcorn eventually went on a 9-1 run to extend their lead to ten and led 37-27 at intermission.

A&M struggled offensively in the third quarter, allowing Alcorn to go up by 18 points, 58-40, to close out the frame. In the final quarter. the Lady Bulldogs continued to battle the Lady Braves and eventually cut their lead to 11, on a jumper from Johnson with 1:49 remaining in the game. However, it wasn't enough, as Alcorn went on to close the game out with a 73-57 win.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Alcorn 26-16 in the paint while the Lady Braves converted 16 A&M misuses into 22 points compared to A&M's 12 points off Alcorn's 11 turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs had seven second chance points on 10 offensive rebounds and both teams had 32 total rebounds each.

The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Texas this weekend, to face Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Texas Southern on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
