HUNTSVILLE--- The Alabama A&M women's basketball team dropped a 68-53 decision to Grambling on Wednesday night in the T.M. Elmore Gym. The Lady Bulldogs fell 2-9 on the season, while the Lady Tigers moved to 4-9 overall.
"I feel like we played in spurts tonight. We played with a lack of energy, a lack of effort at times, and we did not communicate or execute the game plan," Head Coach
Margaret Richards said. "I was very disappointed because coming into this game, I was very confident from practices and how we reviewed, however, we just didn't play the way I expected."
Josta Totten had a team-leading 11 points for a new season high, beating her previous best of 9 points that she had against Samford.
Ebony Johnson also scored in double figures with 10 points, while
Hilary Williams had eight points, and both
Lauren McKee and
Jameica Cobb added eight. Cobb led the Lady Bulldogs with seven rebounds followed by Johnson's six. Williams had four assists for the Lady Bulldogs.
Grambling had a slight 37-36 lead in rebounds, a 4-1 advantage in blocks and a 12-6 lead in steals. The Lady Tigers also led 40-16 in regards to points in the paint.
The Lady Tigers shot 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field, 1-of-9 (11.1%) from behind the arc and 13-of-20 (65%) from the free throw line, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the field, 4-of-15 (26.7%) from three-point range and 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the first quarter to trail Grambling 17-13 after 10 minutes of play. After getting down by 11 (27-16) with 3:54 on the clock in the second quarter, A&M inched back into the game and cut their deficit to six points (27-21) with 2:07 seconds remaining in the frame on a three-pointer by Williams.
Alisha Davis secured two free throws right before the buzzer sounded and Grambling took a 30-23 advantage into the break.
A&M shot just 39-percent in the first half, including 66-percent from three-point range, and was 3-of-8 from the free throw line, compared to GSU's 41-percent from the field, 16-percent from behind the arc and 55 percent from the charity stripe (5-of-9).
Grambling came out and hit 3-of-5 to start the third quarter, while the Lady Bulldogs was 1-of-7 in the first three minutes. The Lady Tigers took an early 13-point advantage (40-27) with 4:58 on the clock in the third.
GSU inched ahead 16 points to start the fourth quarter (54-38) and ended with the 15-point victory.
Grambling was led by Jazmin Boyd with 18 points, followed by Takerra Parsons with 13. Monisha Neal and Shakyla Hill each added nine points. Hill also had a team-high eight rebounds, while Boyd had five assists.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, January 7 against Mississippi Valley in Itta Bena, Miss. Game time is set for 2:00 pm
