WBB Falls on the Road to MVSU, 60-58

ITTA BENA, Miss.---The Alabama A&M women's basketball team dropped a 60-58 decision to Mississippi Valley in the team's first Southwestern Athletic Conference road game Saturday afternoon in R.W. Harrison Complex in Itta Bena, Miss.

AAMU was led in the loss by senior guard Ebony Johnson with 14 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Hilary Williams scored 10 points and added three assists. Freshman Courtney Eggleston, seeing her first action of the season after missing the first eleven games due to injury, dished out nine points and grabbed three rebounds.

For Mississippi Valley, Ashley Beals led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. Christina Reed scored 13 points, four rebounds and dished out four assists. Lauren Elliott added 11for the Devilettes. 

Mississippi Valley started the first period hot, jumping out to a 9-2 lead with 5:18 left. A jumper by freshman Juliette Akinwole gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the game and they led by as many as 7 points in the first period and held a 20-13 advantage after one period.
 
In the second period, the Lady Bulldogs pushed its lead out to nine points at 24-15 with 7:56 to go after two free throws from Williams. The Devilettes fought back to close to within three points at 24-21 with 6:28. The Lady Bulldogs took a 36-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
The Devilettes regained their first lead since the first period, 44-43, early in the third quarter, after a layup by Reed.  The Devilettes then went on a 5-0 run to take control of the game and end the third period with a 51-44 lead.  

The fourth period opened with both teams trading points before MVSU pushed their lead to four points at 59-55 with 0:48 left in the game. Eggleston responded with a three-pointer to cut the Devilettes lead to one with 0:27 on the clock, but the Lady Bulldogs could not pull off the win as MVSU secured the 60-58 victory. 

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action Monday, Jan. 9 at University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
