Merriweather's three-pointer lifts Bulldogs over MVSU

ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Marcus Merriweather's three-pointer with 30 seconds to play lifted the Bulldogs to a 79-76 win Saturday at Mississippi Valley State.

The win was the first of the year for A&M, who is now 1-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, 1-13 overall.

Merriweather's basket gave the Bulldogs a 79-74 lead but MVSU scored two seconds later, cutting the margin to 79-76.

The Devils missed a three-pointer with 15 seconds left and the possible game-tying three-point try with four seconds to play. A&M's Rakiya Battle pulled down the rebound to preserve the win.

Quinterian McConico scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

Merriweather had a season-high 17 points, including five three-pointers, and De'Ederick Petty scored 12 points.

The Bulldogs hit 12 of 23 three-pointers for a season best.

The Delta Devils (0-2, 0-14) had control of the game in the early going, building a 25-15 lead with about 11 minutes to go in the first half.

A three-pointer from Petty and a McConico tip-in cut the MVSU lead in half with 9:13 left. Another three-pointer from Petty with 2:46 to play put the Bulldogs up 36-34.

Rakiya Battle hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to give A&M a 44-38 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs maintained the lead until MVSU tied the score 57-57 with 11:45 left in the game. The Delta Devils then took their first lead of the second half at 59-57 with a pair of free throws at the 11:08 mark.

With A&M trailing 63-62, Ariston Johnson's three-pointer at 6:48 put the Bulldogs in front for good at 65-63.

The Bulldogs travel to Pine Bluff, Ark., to face the Golden Lions on Monday. Tip off is 7:30 p.m.
