Lady Bulldogs fall to ASU

Story Links

HUNTSVILLE -- Now it's time for the Lady Bulldogs soccer team to play the waiting game.

A&M fell to Alabama State 4-0 Thursday in the regular season finale. ASU's Lexi Kreiger had three goals in the game.

With the win, the Hornets clinched the SWAC regular season championship and the top seed in next week's SWAC Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, are in eighth place at 3-7. But their 9 points (3 points for a win, 1 for a tie) equal Alcorn State's 9 points with a 3-6 record going into Friday. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament.

Thus, the waiting game.

1). Alcorn State hosts Mississippi Valley State on Friday. The Delta Devilettes at 4-4-1 (13 points) have wrapped up sixth place and a tourney slot.

2). Ninth-place Jackson State, 2-5-2 (8 points), hosts winless Southern on Friday.

3). Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 2-6-1 and in 10th place with 7 points, visits third-place Grambling State, 6-2-1 (19 points), on Friday.

So, if either Jackson State or UAPB wins, the Lady Bulldogs are out.

If they both lose, the Lady Bulldogs will be traveling to Prairie View A&M next week for the tournament.

If Jackson State ties Southern and Alcorn State loses to Valley, the Tigers will join JSU and A&M in a three-way tie for the final spot.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head but that won't solve the logjam. The Lady Bulldogs beat JSU last weekend; JSU beat Alcorn State and Alcorn State beat the Lady Bulldogs.

It will go to a second and possibly third tiebreaker, with the outcome of Thursday night's Texas Southern-Prairie View A&M match and Friday's Grambling State-UAPB each having a bearing on the tiebreaking system.

Meanwhile in Thursday's game, Alexus Lawson had a pair of shots on goal, including one shot that ASU goalkeeper Gianna Guyot had to leap high and to her left to make the save.

The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to cut into the deficit with about 15 minutes gone in the second half on a penalty kick. But Guyot stopped Camille Nurse's kick to preserve her shutout.

A&M's Jodi Medina had five saves on nine shots on goal. The Lady Bulldogs had five shots on Guyot.
