Lady Bulldogs host Alabama State in key soccer match

HUNTSVILLE -- The intrastate, conference rivalry between Alabama A&M and Alabama State will be renewed Thursday in a regular season finale on The Hill.

And, the outcome will determine possible seedings in next week's SWAC Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-6-0) are tied for seventh with Alcorn State, the top eight spots advance to the league tournament Nov. 2-5 at Prairie View A&M.

With a win today against Alabama State, A&M will wrap up the tournament bid. But, a loss will leave the future in the hands - or feet - of ninth-place Jackson State (2-5-2) and 10th-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-6-1).

So, how close is it?

The Lady Bulldogs and Alcorn State each has nine points in the standings, JSU has eight and UAPB has seven. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a tie.

At the other end of the standings, the Lady Hornets are 7-2-0 with 21 points and in second place behind Howard, 7-2-1 for 22 points. Howard has completed its season while ASU, with a win Thursday, could take first place.

In short, A&M can spoil Alabama State's title hopes while ensuring its own tournament standing with a win Thursday.

Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Bulldogs Field.
