Bulldogs fall to ASU in Magic City Classic

Story Links

BIRMINGHAM -- For the second straight year, the Magic City Classic went down to the final offensive drive of the game for the Bulldogs.

However, this year, the results didn't fall A&M's way in a 21-16 defeat to Alabama State.

The Bulldogs found themselves down 21-9 with 2:41 left in the game after ASU converted an A&M fumble into a touchdown.

A&M's Marceles Clash returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards to the Hornets 26 breathing new life into the Bulldogs.

Quarterback Damion May threw to Isaiah Bailey in the endzone, but the receiver despite being interfered with, nearly pulled down the pass with one hand.

The interference call set up the Bulldogs with a first down on the ASU 11.

Then, May and Bailey connected on a pass to the 2 and, on the next play, Jordan Bentley slashed into the endzone. Nick Carden's point-after made the score 21-16 with 1:48 to play.

On the kickoff, the Bulldogs seemingly recovered an onside kick but were called for offsides.

So, kicker Spencer Corey went to work again with another onside kick and, again, the Bulldogs recovered. This time, there wasn't a flag as Jeron Jones fell on the ball to set up a first and 10 at the A&M 43.

May then completed back-to-back passes to Bailey (7 yards) and Zabrian Moore (4 yards) for a first down at the ASU 46.

On the next play, May ran for 11 yards for another first down.

However, that was as far as A&M would get as May threw four straight incomplete passes and the Hornets took over on downs.

In the first quarter, ASU took the lead when Ronnie Scott picked off a May pass and returned it 59 yards for the touchdown.

The Bulldogs defense put the first A&M points on the board in the second quarter when Vernon Moland sacked ASU quarterback Darryl Pearson in the endzone for a safety.

But that was all of the scoring as the half ended with ASU leading 7-2.

A&M came out with new life to open the second half in an eight-play, 68-yard drive capped by Octayvious Miles' touchdown on a reverse. Carden's point-after gave A&M a 9-7 lead.

ASU answered back with a touchdown on their next series to retake the lead at 14-9 and never looked back.

The A&M defense, ranked No. 1 in the SWAC giving up an average of 320 yards per game, lived up to their ranking as they held the Hornets to 249 yards in total offense.

Kenneth Davis had 8 tackles and three tackles for loss; Zach Oglesby contributed 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup; and Devonte King had four tackles and blocked an ASU field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter.

Trevon Walters led all rushers with 85 yards on 17 carries for the Bulldogs and Clash had 99 all-purpose yards.

The Bulldogs are on the road next Saturday to take on Alcorn State in a key SWAC East Division matchup.
