Bulldogs Fall to Southern Miss, 69-54

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team put up a valiant effort in the second half, but ultimately fell to Southern Miss in a non-conference matchup at home by a final score of 69-54, Wednesday night at Elmore Gym.

The Golden Eagles improve to a 6-4 overall record, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-10.

Southern Miss went 46.6 percent (27-58) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-18) from three-point range and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs shot 34.0 percent (18-53) from the floor, 25.0 percent (6-24) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs won the rebound battle 35-34.

Senior Julian Walters led the Bulldogs with his 13 points, seven rebounds and  five assists in his season debut. Classmate Marcus Merriweather contributed 10 points as he went 100 percent (5-5) from the free throw line, and Junior Arthur Johnson led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds while adding six points.

AAMU trailed by 21 points at halftime, 44-23. The Bulldogs shot poorly in the half, going 10-for-30 from the field and allowed the Golden Eagles to make 16-of-30 shots in the half that included five three-pointers.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 12 points, 59-47, in the second half after a Merriweather three-pointer. The teams would trade points before a Walters' layup would put the Bulldogs within ten, 61-51, with 04:52 remaining on the clock. It would be the closest that the Bulldogs would get as Southern Miss went on an 8-0 run from there and grabbed a 69-51 lead. AAMU tried to make a comeback by cutting the gap to 16 points, 69-53, on an Andre Kennedy jumper, but the Golden Eagles lead was insurmountable as the Bulldogs fell by 15.

AAMU will travel to Birmingham Saturday to face UAB in a 2:15 p.m. matchup at the Birmingham Jam.
