Lady Bulldogs Softball goes 1-4 at Gardner-Webb Tourney

Boiling, N.C. ---The Alabama A&M softball team traveled to the Gardner-Webb Softball Tournament this past weekend to face some tough competition from around the nation. The Lady Bulldogs went 1-4 but two of the four losses were by two runs or less. The Lady Bulldogs were defeated by North Carolina A&T, host Gardner-Webb University, and East Tennessee State in the first three games.  A&M finished the fourth game with a 9-7 win over N.C. A&T. The final game and loss came in a 2-3 decision to East Tennessee State.

In the first game on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs played a close game with North Carolina A&T. After building a 3-0 lead, the Lady Bulldogs got back in the game with the strength of three runs in the third inning, including a single hit from Imani Largin and an Aggies throwing error. A&T jumped to a 5-3 lead in the fourth before a bunt in the top of the sixth would extend their lead to 6-3. Ariel Smith singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to drive Tiana Sanders home. The two teams were scoreless in the seventh inning for the 6-4 final.

The Lady Bulldogs would fall to host Gardner-Webb, 7-3, in its next game. With no runs for the Lady Bulldogs in the game, Eriel Lawson singled in the fourth to score A. Smith to make the score 1-3. A single up the middle from Kia Lang would advance Largin to second and drive in Lawson for A&M's second run of the game. The Lady Bulldogs third run would come off a double from A. Smith in the seventh to drive Sanders home.

On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs faced ETSU. After the Buccaneers built a 3-0 lead, a two-run single from Lang in the second inning put A&M on the board. However, ETSU responded with four runs and held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless for the remaining innings. ETSU secured a 7-2 victory.

The lone win for A&M was in its fourth game, a 9-7 ninth-inning win over North Carolina A&T. The Lady Bulldogs started off strong offensively with 3-0 lead including a two-run homerun in the third from A. Smith. The Aggies remained scoreless until a two-run triple in the bottom of the third followed by home run to take a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the fifth, an Aggies pass ball advanced Tamia Lee-Barbadillo to tie the game. Tied at four, Largin's two-run double allowed A&M to regain a 6-4 lead. The Aggies responded in the sixth with a home run to tie the game. Tied at 6-6, the game extended to nine innings were the Lady Bulldogs secured three runs and held the aggies to one, for the 9-7 final.

A&M finished the weekend Sunday afternoon against ETSU. After A&M built a 2-0 lead, the Buccaneers two-run double tied the game at two in the second inning. A sacrifice fly would give ETSU another run in order to take a 3-2 lead. Both teams continued to battle remaining scoreless in the next five innings.  

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on February 17-19 at Tennessee State Softball Tourney.
