Late Eastern Ky. rally downs Bulldogs

RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Bulldogs staged a three-run, fifth-inning rally to take a 6-5 lead but Eastern Kentucky responded with 11 runs in the final three innings for a 16-6 win Tuesday.

The two teams will conclude their two-game series Wednesday at 3 p.m. Central.

The Bulldogs drew first blood in the first inning on a Carson McGregory RBI single to score Fernando Diaz Jr.

However, the Colonels answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

A&M retook the lead in the third as Carlton Peppers scored on a wild pitch after singling to lead off the inning.

Again, EKU responded, but this time with a four-run inning and a 5-2 lead.

The Bulldogs cut into the lead in the fourth when Peppers' sacrifice fly drove home Wilanier Betancourt.

In the fifth inning, A&M staged a three-run uprising to go ahead 6-5.

Njike Hunter led off with a double down the left-field line. And one out later, he scored on McGregory's single to left to cut the Colonels' lead to 5-4.

After Betancourt walked and McGregory advanced to second, Pierre Brewton doubled to left field to bring home Betancourt and McGregory for the 6-5 lead.

But that was all the scoring for A&M in the game. Eastern Kentucky scored a pair in the sixth inning to go back on top at 7-6. The Colonels exploded for six runs in the seventh and added three more in the eighth for the final 16-6 score.

Brewton finished with three hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs. McGregory had two hits and two RBIs and Betancourt singled twice and scored twice.
