HUNTSVILLE -- The Bulldogs spotted Mississippi Valley State four runs in the first inning but then shut down the Delta Devils the rest of the way.

However, a three-run rally in the eighth was all Alabama A&M could muster in a 4-3 loss Sunday.

The Bulldogs' loss gave the series edge to MVSU 2-1.

After a shaky first inning, starting pitcher Fernando Diaz Jr. limited the Delta Devils to just two hits in five shutout innings.

Brandon Marsonek came on in relief in the seventh inning and continued to blank MVSU on two hits while striking out six in his three innings.

This was Marsonek's 16th appearance on the mound this season which leads the nation. The six strikeouts increase his SWAC-leading total to 45.

MVSU pitcher Dustin Stevens was throwing two-hit ball through six innings until the Bulldogs went to work.

Zeth Malcom was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. Then, Cornelious Woods sent a towering shot over the left-field fence to cut the MVSU lead to 4-2.

Brandon Whitaker, with two outs, singled to center. Pierre Brewton greeted MVSU reliever Connor Sheppeard with a single, allowing Whitaker to advance to second.

Wilanier Betancourt then sent a drifting fly ball into shallow center that was misplayed by the MVSU second baseman. Whitaker scored on the play, Brewton stopped at third and Betancourt reached second.

However, they would be left stranded as Dalton Mitchell flied out to right to end the inning.

The Bulldogs tried to threaten again in the seventh on Woods' two-out double. He was replaced by Betancourt as a pinch-runner. However, he was left on base when Carson McGregory flied out to center.

In the fourth inning, McGregory was robbed of a home run when MVSU rightfielder Kevin Gonzalez caught the ball at the fence, almost tumbling over.

Along with Woods' two hits, Whitaker singled twice for A&M.

The Bulldogs are on the road for the next six games as they visit Tennessee Tech on Wednesday and take on Alcorn State in a three-game SWAC East matchup next weekend.

A&M is also on the road March 28-29 at Morehead State before returning home to host SWAC East rival Jackson State in a three-game series March 31-April 2.
