MONTGOMERY -- Carlton Peppers helped provide the offense with a run scored and by driving in another run but the Bulldogs lost to Alabama State 14-2 in a game called after 6 1/2 innings by run rule Friday.
The game was the first of a Southwestern Athletic Conference-opening three-game series. The two teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
In the top of the sixth inning with ASU leading 8-0, Peppers struck out but reached first when the catcher dropped the third strike and, when the catcher overthrew the first baseman, Peppers then advanced to second.
The Bulldogs scored their second run in the seventh when Peppers hit a two-out single to right to score Dalton Mitchell, who had reached on an infield single.
For the Bulldogs, Carson McGregory had a perfect night at the plate with a double and two walks.
