Bulldogs beat Alabama State with solid pitching, hitting

MONTGOMERY – The Bulldogs got solid pitching and timely hitting Saturday to take a 5-2 win over Alabama State, snapping the Hornets' 26-game Southwestern Athletic Conference winning streak.

The two teams will play the finale of the three-game SWAC opening series Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We played well today," said Head Coach Mitch Hill. "A few mistakes here and there but we got solid pitching and a couple of clutch hits from Darius Smith and Carlton Peppers."

Blaine Milam went six innings to get his second win of the season. He gave up four hits and two runs, none were earned. He also struck out two and walked two.

Brandon Marsonek closed out the final three innings for his third save. He struck out two and gave up one hit.

The two teams were in a scoreless deadlock for the first four innings when the Bulldogs broke through in the top of the fifth.

Carson McGregory led off with a single and moved to second when Fernando Diaz Jr. reached first on a fielder's choice. Smith followed with a single to centerfield to bring home McGregory for the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs made it 2-0 when Diaz scored on a throwing error as the Hornets were trying to turn a double play on Dalton Mitchell's grounder to short.

In the sixth inning, Peppers had a lead-off single and Cornelious Woods drew a walk. After a fielder's choice forced Peppers out at third, McGregory singled to left center and scored Woods for the 3-0 lead.

A&M kept up the offense in the seventh when, with one out, Mitchell reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop. Joannes Diaz doubled to left and Mitchell held up at third. Peppers singled to left and drove home Diaz and Mitchell for a 5-0 lead.

Alabama State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a pair of A&M errors.

Peppers was 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of RBIs and McGregory had two hits with a run scored and a RBI. It was the fifth multi-hit game of the season for Peppers and McGregory.
