MONTGOMERY -- After spotting the defending SWAC champions three runs in the first inning, the Bulldogs battled back before eventually losing 5-4 to Alabama State in 10 innings Sunday.
The game was the finale of the conference-opening three-game series.
Brewton, who entered the game batting .071, was 4-for-4 with one double and three runs batted in - including the game-tying RBI in the ninth inning.
Malcom was 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and one RBI. His three runs scored came on Brewton's RBIs.
Fernando Diaz Jr., making his third start of the season, was knocked around by the Hornets in the first inning. The first three batters reached base as ASU picked up four hits and a walk in scoring three runs.
But the Bulldogs cut into the lead with a run in the second inning when Malcom hit a one-out double to centerfield and scored one out later on Brewton's single to center.
Diaz then retired the Hornets in order in the second and third innings, giving his teammates a chance to tie the score.
And they did.
Carson McGregory drew a one-out walk and scored on Malcom's second double of the game. Then, with two outs, Brewton and Malcom combined for another run, tying the score at 3-3.
The Hornets, though, regained the lead at 4-3Â with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The score remained the same until the Bulldogs rallied in the ninth.
McGregory singled to start things off for A&M and was replaced by pinch-runner Brandon Whitaker.
On his first pitch, Malcom ripped a shot to left-center for a double and Whitaker took off, headed for home. However, he was out at the plate but Malcom advanced to third.
With two outs, Brewton doubled to left field to bring home Malcom with the tying run.
But the Bulldogs' inning ended with Brewton on second.
Brandon Marsonek, who came on to pitch in the sixth inning for the Bulldogs, retired the Hornets in order in the ninth.
The Bulldogs were retired in order in the 10th and Alabama State used a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a RBI single to score the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday when UAB visits Bulldog Field. First pitch is 2 p.m.
