BIRMINGHAM -- Carlton Peppers and Pierre Brewton each had a pair of hits but the Bulldogs dropped a 8-2 decision to UAB in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
In the nightcap, Zeth Malcom homered in the sixth inning for the lone run in a 7-1 loss. Both games were seven-inning games.
In the opener, the Bulldogs were scoreless until the sixth inning when Pierre Brewton led off with a double down the left-field line. He then moved to third on a passed ball and, one out later, Dalton Mitchell was walked.
Joannes Diaz followed with a single to score Brewton and Mitchell reached third.
Peppers hit a lazy single to shallow left-center to bring home Mitchell and make the score 7-2. After another out, Peppers advanced to second and Diaz went to third on a wild pitch but they would be left stranded.
The Blazers took the early lead with a run in the first, four more in the second and two runs in the third.
Game 2: UAB 7, Alabama A&M 1
The two teams were locked in a pitcher's duel though the Blazers led 2-0 after four innings.
Then, UAB exploded for five runs in the fifth to take the win and a sweep of the doubleheader.
Malcom's home run came with two outs in the sixth and hit the Home Run Porch in the left-field seats. It was his third home run this season, tying him for the Southwestern Athletic Conference lead.
The Bulldogs will head to Texas State for a three-game series this weekend.
