HUNTSVILLE -- Carlton Peppers hit a three-run home run as the Bulldogs attempted a late-inning comeback in a 6-3 loss to Jackson State.
The game was the first of a three-game SWAC Eastern Divison series. They will play Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (8-22 overall) and the Tigers are 7-3, 20-11.
Jackson State took an early lead with a run in the first inning and three more in the second inning - highlighted by a Lakon Wilson two-run home run. The Tigers then increased their lead to 6-0 with a run in the fourth inning on Wilson's RBI double and a run in the fifth.
The Bulldogs threatened to score in the sixth inning when Brandon Whitaker led off with a single. But he was forced at second and Dalton Mitchell reached base on the fielder's choice.
The Bulldogs' runs came in the eighth inning with two outs.
McGregory singled and advance to second when Woods was hit by a pitch. Peppers then drove a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield fence to cut JSU's lead to 6-3.
Peppers, McGregory and Brewton each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
