Bulldogs hold their own with ranked Tennessee Tech squad

HUNTSVILLE -- Except for one inning, the Bulldogs held their own Tuesday with the nation's 26th-ranked baseball team.

Tennessee Tech scored five runs in the fifth inning - four coming on a grand slam - to post a 10-4 win over Alabama A&M.

The Bulldogs started off strong behind the pitching of Brandon Marsonek, who was making just his fourth start this season and nation's-leading 28th pitching appearance.

The senior lefthander went the first four innings, striking out four and allowing no earned runs - the sixth time in his last eight appearances that he has not allowed an earned run.

His four strikeouts give him 85 this season - the second most in the nation - and he has pitched in 72.1 innings, which is the most in the country.

The Bulldogs scored first - the benefit of a passed ball.

Fernando Diaz Jr. started things off for Alabama A&M with a leadoff single to center in the first inning. He stole second and, with one out, moved to third on a groundout. Diaz completed his circuit around the base path on the passed ball to the backstop.

However, it took the Bulldogs five more innings to score while the Golden Eagles put six more runs up for a 7-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs put together back-to-back, two-out doubles by Wilanier Betancourt and Carlton Peppers and cut the Tech lead to 7-2.

The Golden Eagles scored three more runs in the top of the ninth to run the score to 10-2.

The Bulldogs started off the ninth with Peppers and Brandon Whitaker drawing back-to-back walks. Joannes Diaz reached first on a fielder's choice, which forced Whitaker out at second and Peppers moved to third.

Peppers scored on a balk with Carson McGregory at the plate and Diaz moved to second. McGregory then singled up the middle and Diaz scored what proved to be the final run of the game.

Betancourt, Peppers and Cornelious Woods each doubled for the Bulldogs,  who host North Alabama at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
