Bulldogs beat Alcorn, clinch SWAC tournament spot

Story Links

HUNTSVILLE -- To clinch a spot in the 2017 SWAC Baseball Tournament, the Bulldogs' magic number was two. All they needed was a combination of A&M wins and Mississippi Valley State losses to equal two and they were in.

On Friday, the Bulldogs unleashed a 15-hit attack - featuring five runs batted in from Carson McGregory - in an 8-6 come-from-behind win over Alcorn State. Later in the evening, Alabama State beat MVSU 12-3 to send A&M into postseason play.

The Bulldogs (8-11) will play Alcorn State (6-13) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the second game of their three-game series at Bulldog Field. The finale is 1 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday is also Senior Day and a trio of Bulldogs - Owen Stubberfield, Cornelious Woods and Brandon Marsonek - will be honored before the game.

In Friday's win, McGregory was 3-for 3, Zeth Malcom had three hits, including a double, and Caleb Gay singled three times to pace the Bulldogs.

Alcorn State jumped out front when Kirt Cormier hit a solo home run in the first inning.

But the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Whitaker and Carlton Peppers each drew one-out walks and Malcom singled to load the bases.

McGregory then singled through the right side to score Whitaker and Peppers for the 2-1 lead.

In the third inning, Malcom hit a one-out double and McGregory followed with another single to bring home Malcom and give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs ran the score to 4-1 in the fourth inning by playing small ball. Whitaker walked to open the inning and McGregory bunted him to second. Gay's RBI single brought Whitaker home.

However, the Braves rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth for a 5-4 lead.

The Bulldogs, though, were not to be denied.

Daulton Mitchell reached second on an error to open the Bulldogs' sixth. He then moved to third on a groundout.

With two outs, Malcom singled and Mitchell scored the game-tying run.

Then, McGregory drove a pitch over the rightfield fence to put the Bulldogs up 7-5. It was McGregory's first home run of the year and couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

Bulldogs starter Blaine Milam shut down the Braves in the seventh inning on a fly out and a pair of strikeouts.

However, Alcorn State scored a run in the eighth to cut A&M's lead to 7-6.

A great throw by rightfielder Fernando Diaz Jr. to gun down Alcorn's Wallace Rios-Jimenez at the plate preserved the lead.

With the bases loaded, Cormier singled to right. Brandon Barna scored from third and as Rios-Jimenez, who was on second, rounded third, Diaz unleashed a perfect one-hop throw to Malcom who braced for a collision at the plate.

Rios-Jimenez crashed into Malcom, but the A&M catcher held onto the ball for the out. Rios-Jimenez was then ejected from the game on the play.

McGregory led off the A&M eighth with a walk and advanced to second when Gay reached on an error. However, McGregory was erased on a double play while Gay moved to second.

Fernando Diaz Jr. greeted a new Alcorn pitcher with a single through the left side to bring Gay home with the insurance run.

And the Bulldogs brought in their insurance policy in the form of closer Brandon Marsonek.

Marsonek came into the game with a runner on first in the top of the ninth and promptly struck out the next three batters to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Marsonek's three strikeouts increase his total to 107 this season, four behind Stetson's Brooks Wilson, who struck out nine Friday in the Hatters' win over South Florida.
