Bulldogs top Braves in run-rule game

Story Links

HUNTSVILLE -- The Bulldogs pitched, hit and threw their way to a 12-1 win Saturday over Alcorn State. The game was called after seven innings for the "mercy rule."

Pitch: Brandon Marsonek went the distance on the mound. He fanned six Braves to raise his total this season to 113 - most in the nation. He also has 202 strikeouts in his two-year A&M career.

Hit: Every Bulldog batter had at least one hit in the game while Brandon Whitaker had a three-hit day.

Throw: Rightfielder Pierre Brewton and catcher Zeth Malcom combined on a flyout-throw 'im out-tag 'im out double play at the plate in the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs (9-11 in the SWAC) essentially put the game away with a four-run first inning.

Dalton Mitchell and Whitaker got A&M off and running with back-to-back game-opening singles - Mitchell moving the third on Whitaker's hit.

Carlton Peppers then dropped a squeeze bunt down the third base line to score Mitchell.

One out later, Carson McGregory singled to left-center to bring home Whitaker and an error on the play allowed Peppers to score for the 3-0 lead.

McGregory moved to third on the play and Caleb Gay followed up with the fifth single of the inning to drive in McGregory.

The Bulldogs ran the score to 7-0 with three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Mitchell and Whitaker scoring on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the third and two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to run the lead to 12-0.

Alcorn State (6-14) scored in the top of the seventh for the final 12-1 count.

The two teams close out their series Sunday at noon.

The Bulldogs and Braves each have four SWAC games remaining - A&M is at Jackson State for three games next weekend and Alcorn State hosts Alabama State in a season-ending three-game series.

A&M's magic number to lock up third place in the SWAC Eastern Division is 1 - either an A&M win or Alcorn State loss over the next four games will clinch the No. 3 division spot for next month's SWAC Baseball Tournament.
