Softball Takes Game One Against Jackson State 5-3

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Senior pitcher Caitlyn Hayden picked up her ninth win of the season in her seven innings to help lead the Alabama A&M University softball team to a 5-3 win over the Jackson State Tigers in game one of the SWAC series Friday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field. The teams will meet in game two of the series Saturday at 12 p.m.

A&M (14-29, 7-8 SWAC) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Imani Largin advanced to third on a wild pitch and Madi Pozzi reached on an error by the catcher. Lavarsha Thigpen bunted to bring Largin home to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

With two outs, Jackson State (12-34, 5-11 SWAC) capitalized on two hits and one error to score three runs in the fifth and take a 3-2 lead over A&M.

The Lady Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fifth when Danielle Hansell doubled to left field to score Eriel Lawson followed by Tiana Sanders being walked. With a tied game and two outs, Ariel Smith delivered a two-run double to give A&M a 5-3 lead. The Lady Tigers added three hits in the last two innings, but The Lady Bulldogs would shut the door on JSU the rest of the way to secure the win.  

Hayden picked up the win, allowing three runs, three earned, on ten hits and striking out eleven in seven innings.
