Alabama State beats Bulldogs in Diamond Classic

BIRMINGHAM -- The Bulldogs practically matched Alabama State hit for hit but they couldn't keep pace on the scoreboard Friday and fell to the Hornets 9-2 in the Magic City Diamond Classic.

The game was the first of the three-game SWAC Eastern Division series that continues Saturday and concludes Sunday. Saturday's first pitch is 3 p.m. and Sunday's game starts at 1 p.m. Both games are at Bulldogs Field.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and built a 6-0 advantage before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cornelious Woods singled to lead off the inning. Then, one out later, Kyle Redmond singled to right field.

Woods and Redmond later advanced on a wild pitch.

With two out, Njike Hunter singled through the right side to drive in Woods and Redmond and cut ASU's lead to 6-2.

However, that was the only scoring for the Bulldogs in the game.

Redmond, who had two singles has hit safely in his last four games.

Wilanier Betancourt also singled twice for A&M.
