Bulldogs fall to Alabama State in series finale

HUNTSVILLE -- Fernando Diaz Jr. had a pair of hits and scored a run but the Bulldogs were beset by control problems in a 11-2 loss Sunday to Alabama State.

The Bulldogs are now 5-10 and in third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division and 8-28 overall.

A&M pitchers' control problems Sunday resulted in seven hit batters and a four-run fifth inning to break open a tight game; four of the hit batters were in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Diaz singled and moved to second on Njike Hunter's single.

Then, one out later, Brandon Whitaker reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed Diaz to score for the Bulldogs.

Wilanier Betancourt followed with a single to score Whitaker and cut the ASU lead to 6-2.

The Hornets, though, scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings and wrapped up the scoring with three more in the ninth.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when Arkansas-Pine Bluff visits for a doubleheader.
