Gay doubles twice, Peppers homers in Bulldogs loss at Belmont

NASHVILLE – Carlton Peppers hit his second home run in as many games and Caleb Gay ripped a pair of doubles Wednesday but the Bulldogs fell to Belmont 10-7.

The game was the regular season finale for Alabama A&M as they prepare for next week's SWAC baseball tournament in New Orleans.

The Bulldogs await the outcome of Sunday's Texas Southern-Southern to determine who they will play in the first round.

Peppers' home run came in the fifth inning with Joannes Diaz on base. His drive over the left field fence gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a leadoff single. After being bunted over to second by Diaz, he scored on Zeth Malcom's single to lead 1-0.
But Belmont responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and scored another run in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning when Cornelious Woods' sacrifice fly scored Malcom.

In the sixth inning, Diaz worked a two-out walk and Peppers followed with his drive over the left field fence. It was Peppers' third home run of the season - and second straight in two games.

Belmont, though, answered back with six runs in their half of the inning to take a 9-4 lead.

But A&M didn't lie down. The Bulldogs put together a three-run sixth inning - highlighted by Gay's two-run double scorched down the left field line. His hit brought in Wilanier Betancourt and Carson McGregory to cut Belmont's lead to 9-6.

Mitchell followed up with a single to score Gay and the Bulldogs were down by two at 9-7.

Belmont added a rum in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-7 lead.

The Bulldogs attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth and had runners at first and second but couldn't push them across.

Gay finished with two doubles and two RBIs; Peppers had a two-run home run; and Malcom and Woods each had two hits.
