NEW ORLEANS -- A furious ninth-inning rally fell short as the Bulldogs dropped a 7-4 decision Wednesday to Texas Southern in the opening game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament.

The Bulldogs will face Southern at 9 a.m. Thursday in a losers bracket game of the double-elimination tournament. Southern lost to Jackson State 4-2 Wednesday.

A&M trailed 7-0 entering the ninth inning when they jumped on Texas Southern starter Anthony Martinez.

Fernando Diaz Jr. got things rolling with a single to open the ninth. Brandon Whitaker then reached on an error and Diaz, catching the Tigers off guard, advanced to third base.

Dalton Mitchell ripped a double over the leftfielder's head to bring home Diaz with A&M's first run and move Whitaker to third.

Pierre Brewton singled to deep short to score Whitaker and Mitchell moved up to third on the play.

Carlton Peppers drove in Mitchell when he reached first on a fielder's choice and Brewton moved to second.

Zeth Malcom bounced into a double play but Brewton made it to third base.

After Carson McGregory was hit by a pitch, Wilanier Betancourt hit an RBI single to cut the Texas Southern lead to 7-4.

McGregory and Betancourt would move up a base on an errant pickoff attempt but they wouldn't advance after that.

Brandon Marsonek started on the mound for the Bulldogs and recorded 10 strikeouts but a Tiger six-run sixth inning sealed A&M's fate.

His NCAA-leading strikeout total for the year is now 137.

Diaz Jr. had a pair of singles to lead the A&M offense.
