Softball Falls to Southern in Second Round of SWAC Tournament

MONTGOMERY — The Alabama A&M University softball team was defeated by Southern University in the second match-up of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, 10-2.

The Lady Bulldogs (17-30, 8-7 SWAC) in the second round of games of the SWAC Tournament was locked in a pitcher's duel against the Lady Jaguars as the contest remained scoreless in the first inning.    

AAMU scored first after a triple down right center and a throwing error by center field to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Jaguars followed up in the top of the third inning, scoring a run after a sacrifice fly followed by a single RBI ground to second base to hold a 2-1 advantage over the Lady Bulldogs.

Tiana Sanders responded in the bottom of the third with a single to left field to score Kia Lang and tie the game at two.

Both teams remained scoreless in the fourth inning before Southern took a 4-2 lead after a triple and single in the top of the fifth followed by two runs in the sixth from a single and fielding error.

The Lady Bulldogs could not capitalize late in the ballgame and were shutout in the remaining innings as Southern's momentum carried over into the sixth as AAMU fell to the Lady Jaguars by a final score of 10-2.

AAMU was led on offense by Imani Largin who went 2-for-1 in the game with one run and a triple, while Tiana Sanders went 3-for-2 with one RBI for the day. Kia Lang went 4-for-2 with one run for the Lady Bulldogs.

AAMU will return to action in the SWAC Championship Tournament on Friday, May 12, as the Lady Bulldogs will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff at noon.
