Bulldogs rally comes up short at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Bulldogs scored four runs in a late-game three-inning rally but came up short Saturday in a 7-5 loss to Jackson State.

A&M, trailing 7-1 after four innings, scored a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and another run in the seventh while blanking the SWAC's No. 1 team for the final four innings.

The Bulldogs struck first with a run in the second inning when Wilanier Betancourt doubled down the left-field line to score Darren Beachem.

But the Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and four more runs in the third and another run in their half of the fourth, all off A&M starter Brandon Marsonek.

In the fifth inning, Carlton Peppers ripped a one-out double to left field. Then, one out later, Carson McGregory singled to right field to bring home Peppers and cut the JSU lead to 7-2.

The Bulldogs' bats went back to work in the top of the sixth when Betancourt, who reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a Dalton Mitchell single, scored on a wild pitch.

Peppers then singled and Mitchell scored when the centerfielder misplayed the ball and the Bulldogs trailed 7-4.

The Bulldogs put another run on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Caleb Gay led off with a walk and moved to second on Darius Smith's single. Beachem followed with a single and Gay scored the final run.

Led by Beachem's four-hit day, the Bulldogs pounded 15 hits off the league's top pitching staff but left 14 runners on base.

Peppers added three hits and Betancourt and Zeth Malcom each had a pair of hits.

Marsonek gave up 12 hits and struck out 8 batters to run his NCAA-leading total to 123.

The Bulldogs and JSU close out the series and the SWAC regular season Sunday at 1 p.m.
