Bulldogs drop SWAC season finale to Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Bulldogs wrapped up their 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball schedule Sunday with an eye toward the tournament May 17-21 in New Orleans.

Alabama A&M (9-15) lost its SWAC series finale 10-3 to Jackson State, despite a three-hit performance from Dalton Mitchell.

Mitchell has hit safely in six of the last seven games - including four multihit games - and he has reached base in eight straight games.

Fernando Diaz Jr. singled twice and it was his third multihit game of the season.

Trailing 1-0 after three innings, the Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth inning when Carlton Peppers led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cornelious Woods.

However, Jackson State scored eight runs over the next four innings for a 9-1 lead.

In the eighth, Mitchell led off with a single and moved to second when Pierre Brewton was walked. Peppers then hit a ground ball to third, forcing out Mitchell, but the third baseman made a wild throw, enabling Brewton to reach third and Peppers move to second.

Zeth Malcom then reached first on another error by the third baseman which allowed Brewton to score and Peppers advance to second. Peppers then scored for the second time in the game on a Woods sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs wind down their regular season in Nashville when they visit Lipscomb on Tuesday and Belmont on Wednesday.
