Lady Bulldogs Fall Short at Alcorn State, 57-52

LORMAN, Miss.--- The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team fell, 57-52, in its road contest at Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fall 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Lady Braves improve to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in league play.

The Lady Bulldogs came out the gate strong offensively, taking a quick 9-0 lead. A free throw from Tierra Dark allowed AAMU to extend their lead to 10 with 5:37 remaining in the second quarter. Down 25-15, Alcorn State would then have a run of their own,13-6, to cut the Lady Bulldogs lead to two, 31-28, at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Alcorn State went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 36-31. The Lady Bulldogs didn't fold easily, answering back with a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead, 37-36, with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter. The teams would continue to trade points before Ashlyn Dotson's layup gave AAMU a 41-38 advantage at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead, 48-38, off of six free throws and a layup. The Lady Braves quickly responded with two three-pointers and a lay-up to come within two points, 50-48. Alcorn State would eventually regain a one-point lead, and with 0:39 on the clock, a clutch three-pointer would give them a 56-52 lead over AAMU. The Lady Bulldogs were unsuccessful in closing the game in time as Alcorn State pulled out the 57-52 victory.

Dotson led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points while adding five rebounds. Dark, Natalie Collins and DeShawna Harper each had eight points respectively. Kanisha Tharpe pulled down eight boards to lead the team in rebounds.

The Lady Braves saw two players in double-figure scoring, which was led by Alexus Freeman who had a game-high 16 points, followed by Miracle Rushing who added 12 points for the Lady Braves.

Alabama A&M outrebounded the Lady Braves, 38-34, but allowed the hosts to shoot 40.7% from the floor (22-of-54) and 33.3% from downtown (5-of-15). The Lady Braves secured 22 points off the Lady Bulldogs 21 turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs made 18 points off Alcorn's 20 turnovers.

The Lady Bulldogs will complete their two-game road trip on Monday, as they travel to Baton Rouge, LA to face Southern University for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
