BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama A&M fell to Southern, 77-62, in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women's basketball action Monday evening in Baton Rouge, La. With the win the Lady Jaguars improve to 8-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 8-10 on the season and 3-4 in SWAC play.
The first quarter saw the Lady Jaguars take an early 15-8 lead before Natalie Collins hit a three-pointer to cut Southern's lead to four with 4:33 on the clock. The teams traded points with the Lady Bulldogs not allowing Southern to take more than a four-point lead, 20-16, headed into the second quarter.
Jameica Cobb started the second quarter at the free throw line for the Lady Bulldogs before the Lady Jaguars took a 11-1 run to extend their lead to 13, 31-18. With 6:26 on the clock. Kanisha Tharpe went on a solo 5-0 run, which included a jumper, layup and foul to bring the Lady Bulldogs within single digits of the Lady Jaguars. Southern would respond with another run to regain a 13 point lead, 41-28, over the Lady Bulldogs at halftime.
The back and forth affair continued in the third quarter with both teams trading baskets and the Lady Bulldogs pulled to within 10 points of Southern. From that point, the Lady Jaguars went on a 10-4 run closing out the quarter with a score of 60-44.
Despite their best efforts, Southern continued to distance themselves from the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, gaining their biggest lead of the game (24) with 6:57 on the clock. The Lady Jaguars continued to extend their lead and eventually won the game with the final score of 77-62.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Collins with 15 points and three rebounds. She was followed by Ashlyn Dotson who contributed 12 points. Alexandria Johnson led the team with nine total rebounds while adding 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to SWAC play on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they host Texas Southern. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 4:00 p.m.
