Women’s Basketball Outlasted by Texas Southern, 55-49

HUNTSVILLE--- The Alabama A&M women's basketball team fought hard for four quarters Saturday afternoon against the visiting Texas Southern Lady Tigers, but came up on the losing end of a 55-49 decision in Elmore Gym.  

With the defeat, Alabama A&M falls to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in SWAC play, while Texas Southern improves to 11-8 and 6-2, respectively.

After trailing by 13 points following the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tigers 19-11 in the second quarter to cut TSU's deficit to five, 28-23, heading into the break.

In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to 10, 39-29, before the Lady Bulldogs built a 10-2 lead to bring Alabama A&M within two, 41-39, with 1:25 on the clock. Alabama A&M was able to hold the Lady Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the third quarter.

Texas Southern responded with a 6-0 run of their own in the final quarter and held the Lady Bulldogs scoreless until Ashlyn Dotson's jumper at 3:54 on the clock. Both teams traded points before TSU pushed their lead back to 10.

With 45 seconds left to play in the game, Courtney Eggleston shot a three-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs, but TSU was sent to the foul line to secure a free-throw shot with 14 seconds on the clock to lead the Lady Tigers to a 55-49 victory.

Both teams shot in the mid-30 percent range from the field. The Lady Bulldogs shot 35.6 percent (21-59) from the field, while Texas Southern shot 33.9 percent (20-59). The Lady Bulldogs a won the battle of the boards, 40-35, but committed 20 turnovers compared to the Lady Tigers 11, which allowed Texas Southern to secure 20 points off of the Lady Bulldogs turnovers.

Dotson led AAMU with a near double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Nigeria Jones added eight points, six rebounds and led the team with 10 assists.
TSU's Joyce Kennerson scored a game-high 28 points and Kaitlyn Palmer added 15 points.

Alabama A&M returns to the hardwood Monday, for a 5:30 p.m. contest at Elmore Gym against the visiting Prairie View A&M.
