Women’s Basketball tops UAPB for first conference win of season


HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama A&M women's basketball team pulled ahead to earn its first Southwestern Athletic Conference victory of the season, 52-49, over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday afternoon at Elmore Gym.

The Lady Bulldogs improve to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the SWAC. The visiting Golden Lions fall to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in SWAC play.
 
Three-point field goals proved to be one of the difference makers in the game as the Lady Bulldogs shot 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, making 5-of-13, while UAPB went 0-of-10 from the three-point line. Natalie Collins accounted for three of the Lady Bulldogs made three-pointers.  AAMU shot 33.3 percent from the field (18-of-54) and 69 percent (11-of-16) from the charity strip.

Ashlyn Dotson led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points while posting four rebounds. Collins and Nigeria Jones each added nine points, with Jones leading the team in rebounds with five boards and four steals.

The Lady Bulldogs forced 21 turnovers, but were out rebounded by the Golden Lions, 36-30.

Faith Ohanta led the Golden Lions and all scorers with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Aiya Hassan added 12 points and four rebounds for UAPB.

The Lady Bulldogs look to continue building their SWAC winning column as they host Mississippi Valley on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Elmore Gym.
