Men’s Basketball Topped by Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE-- The Alabama A&M men's basketball team was held to 38% shooting as Alabama State cruised to a 69-50 win over the Bulldogs in Elmore Gym.

The Bulldogs drop 2-23 overall and 2-10 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, while Alabama State improves to 6-18 and 6-6 in league play.

Andre Kennedy led Alabama A&M with 16 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Arthur Johnson contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.  

In the opening half, the Hornets jumped out to a 29-6 lead and eventually were ahead 30-11 with 8:27 on the clock.  Alabama A&M inched their way back into the game going on a 12-2 run to cut Alabama State's deficit to eight.  The Hornets embarked on a 6-2 run of their own to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.

Alabama State did not let up in the second half and led 43-27 three minutes into the closing half. The Bulldogs continued to battle but were only able to get within 14 points of Alabama State. The Hornets would extend their lead by as many as 19 points in the half and would close out to secure the 69-50 win.  

The Hornets placed three players in double figures led by Branden Johnson 14 points. Tobi Ewuosho added 12 while Ed Jones notched 11 in the win.

The Bulldogs attempted 16 three pointers making just one of them.  They did force 14 turnovers in the loss, but allowed Alabama State to shoot 50% from the field.  The Bulldogs owned a 40-29 edge off the glass.

Alabama A&M will return to Elmore Gym on Sat. Feb, 17 as they host Prairie View A&M for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
