Lady Bulldogs Rally Past Alcorn State, 74-63

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Freshmen Ashlyn Dotson scored 18 points while leading the Alabama A&M women's basketball team to a 74-63 conference win over Alcorn State at Elmore Gym on Saturday evening. The Lady Bulldogs led for nearly the entire contest to earn a victory over Alcorn.

Alabama A&M took an early lead, including an eight-point margin (20-12) at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held on to their lead in the second quarter, extending it to as many as 12 with 2:14 remaining in the quarter. The teams would continue to trade points, which included two three-pointers from the Lady Braves. A layup from Alexandra Johnson would send the Lady Bulldogs into the locker room up, 39-28.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-14, 5-8 SWAC) opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt, but Alcorn responded back with a 9-0 run of their own to get within eight of Alabama A&M. With 1:13 remaining in the third, Dotson's fast break layup pushed AAMU's margin back to double-digits, 56-44, heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs stretch their lead to 19, 65-46, with 6:07 on the clock. Alcorn would pull within nine with 1:52 remaining to play, but that was the closest they would get as the Lady Bulldogs secured the win.

Dotson netted 9-of-10 from the field and added two blocks for the Lady Bulldogs. Nigeria Jones (15) and Natalie Collins (14) also scored in double digits for Alabama A&M. Collins led the Lady Bulldogs with eight rebounds and Aubriana Bonner grabbed seven boards and four assists. Jones also led the team with five assists. 

Alabama A&M shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from behind the arc and 68 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs finished with a 38-33 advantage on the boards.

Jada Hargrove paced Alcorn (10-15, 6-8 SWAC) with 17 points, four rebounds and one assist. Alexus Freeman added 12 points for the Lady Braves.
Lady Bulldogs remains at home and will face Southern on Monday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
