Women's Basketball Drops 58-46 Battle to Southern

HUNTSVILLE – The Alabama A&M women's basketball team wrapped up its three-game homestead with a 58-46 loss to Southern Monday evening at Elmore Gym.  
 
With the loss, Alabama A&M falls to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Bulldogs are 5-5 in true home games so far this season. Southern improves to 13-11 overall and 12-3 in league games.
 
Alabama A&M was led by Alexandra Johnson with 12 points and 22 rebounds, marking her second double-double this season. DeShawna Harper also had 12 points, while Tierra Dark added nine.
 
For Southern, Briana Green led the way with 18 points. Samantha Duncan scored 14 points, while Courtney Parsons added 11 points for the Jaguars.
 
Southern jumped out to an early 16-7 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Alabama A&M then went on an 8-4 run at the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to five. With Southern leading 20-15 to open the second quarter, the Jaguars went on a 14-5 run to push their lead to 34-20 with 3:11 left in the second quarter. A jumper by Dark cut the Southern lead to 34-22 heading into the locker room at halftime.
 
Alabama A&M opened the third quarter on a 12-5 run to bring them within five of the Jaguars, 38-33,  with 4 minutes left in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Harper. Southern responded with a 9-4 run of their own to regain a ten-point lead with 1:31 on the clock. A layup from Ashlyn Dotson, with 10 seconds remaining on the clock, would bring the Jaguars lead back to single digits.

A pair of free throws by Dotson at the start of the fourth quarter brought the Lady Bulldogs within six of Southern, 47-41. The Jags answered with a jumper, which was followed by a three-pointer from McKee to allow the Lady Bulldogs to cut it to a five-point game. Up 49-44, Southern went on a 9-2 run which allowed the Jaguars to come away with the 58-46 win.  
 
As a team, Alabama A&M shot just 31.1 percent, while Southern made just 34.4 percent of its shots. The Jaguars were 11-of-22 from the free-throw line, while Alabama A&M was 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. The Lady Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, 50-41.
 
Alabama A&M will hit the road to face Texas Southern on Saturday, Feb. 24.
