PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Alabama A&M women's basketball team dropped its final road contest of the season Monday night, losing 84-73 to Prairie View A&M during Southwestern Athletic Conference action in the William J. Nicks Babydome.
Alabama A&M (10-17, 5-11 SWAC) got four quick points from Tierra Dark to open the game as part of a 6-0 start to matters, and the Lady Bulldogs shook off a Prairie View (13-14, 11-5 SWAC) charge to remain ahead as the first quarter ended, though Dobbins buried a three-pointer with three ticks left in the frame.
The Lady Bulldogs pushed its lead to as many as seven thanks to a 11-1 run powered by Lauren McKee and Aubriana Bonner. However, Dobbins and Dominique Newman asserted themselves down the stretch of the first half as the Lady Panther duo combined for 13 points during a 17-6 run to close the half, giving Prairie View a 37-34 lead at the break.
Neither side gained much distance in the third, but Nigeria Jones gave some momentum to AAMU with four points in the final 90 seconds of the third to put the Lady Bulldogs within one possession of Prairie View. Alabama A&M got within a point (57-56) of PVAMU with just over eight minutes left, but the Lady Panthers' Talisha Presley went off for 11 points in a span of two minutes -- including three treys -- to ultimately slam the door on Alabama A&M's comeback hopes. Prairie View iced matters from the free throw line.
McKee led AAMU with 23 points, Bonner added 13, and Jones scored 12.
For the Panthers, Presley ended the night with 21 points, and Newman added 16.
The Lady Bulldogs will be be home on Thursday, March 1 to host Grambling State in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
