Late Surge Lifts MVSU Past Bulldogs

ITTA BENA, Miss.--- Senior Arthur Johnson had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, but Mississippi Valley used a late surge in the second half to defeat the Alabama A&M men's basketball team, 77-67, Monday evening.

The Bulldogs fall to 2-22 overall and 2-9 in the league, while Mississippi Valley improves to 2-22 overall and 2-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Evan Wiley scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Andre Kennedy contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Leading MVSU was Jordan Evans with a game-high 23 points while Dante Scott scored 16 points and Gemaal Davis added 10 points. Emmanuel Ejeh led in rebounds with 15.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start, holding off MVSU in the first eight minutes of the game. The starting five all added to the first 16 points for the Bulldogs, as they led by as much as 13 in the first half of play. With 10 seconds to play in the first half, the Devils tied the contest up, 37-37, headed into the locker room.

In the second half, AAMU went back up six points after a bucket by Julian Walters. The Devils responded with a 12-4 run, and a three-pointer with 13:50 on the clock would give MVSU their first lead of the game, 49-47. with 13:50 left. The Devils grabbed a hold of the lead and never looked back as they went on to secure the 10-point lead.

The Bulldogs return home to host Alabama State, Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Elmore Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
