Baseball slugs their way to a 2-1 weekend

HUNTSVILLE – The Alabama A&M Baseball team went 2-1 over the weekend against Alabama State at Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs (5-10, 2-4 SWAC) opened up the weekend on Friday with a 5-4 extra innings loss to the Hornets.

AAMU got off to a strong start, jumping up on Alabama State 3-0. However, strong fourth, ninth and tenth innings by the Hornets lifted them above the Bulldogs 5-3.

In the bottom of the tenth, Will Stripling scored off a throwing error to give the Bulldogs their fourth run of the game, but they were unable to secure another run as Alabama State took game one.

In the second game, the Bulldogs used a two run eighth frame to edge Alabama State by the final of 6-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Jonathan Smith II was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a double to lead AAMU.

The Hornets (9-6, 4-2 SWAC) opened the game with a 2-0 lead before a RBI single and errors in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings allowed the Bulldogs to take a 5-3 lead.

With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, ASU's Hunter Phillips was walked to tie the game at five. The Hornets then doubled to right center to take a 6-5 lead.

At the top of the eighth, Smith doubled down the left line to score Stripling and Raymond Santiago to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 victory.

In the third game, the Bulldogs took the 3-0 victory.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings. Carlton Peppers led off the third inning with a RBI single to score Tyus O'Neal-El to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0.

Wilanier Betancourt doubled to right center in the fourth inning to score Justin Lott, before J.T. O'Reel's RBI single in the seventh inning pushed the lead to 3-0.

Alabama A&M will next be back in action Tuesday and Wednesday at Alabama.
