Softball Defeats Prairie View in Game One, 8-5

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -  Alabama A&M (9-7, 1-0) opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play with an 8-5 victory over Prairie View A&M (2-13, 0-1) Friday afternoon at Lady Bulldog field.

Tiana Sanders led the Lady Bulldogs with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, scoring two runs and hitting a two-run homer in the fifth that ultimately sparked the decisive inning.

Prairie View A&M struck first as Shelby Williams led off the game with a single. After S. Williams swiped second, Destinee Williams smacked a two-run shot off AAMU starter Lauren Hayden to put the Lady Panthers up 2-0. Alabama A&M got one back in its half of the first as Sanders picked up a two-out single and Ariel Smith reached first after being hit by a pitch. Madi Pozzi then singled down the left field line to score Sanders.

Alabama A&M took the lead in the second on a Jessica Alferos two-run single that scored Tamia-Lee Barbadillo and Danielle Hansell, but the advantage was short-lived as a two-run triple from PVAMU's Day'Zjah Pennywell in the top of fourth made the game 4-3.

After both sides traded scoreless innings, Sanders' round-tripper sparked off a four-run fifith inning for the Lady Bulldogs, as Kia Lang and Dorian Edwards each collected RBI base hits in the frame. Both sides picked up another run late, but AAMU's lead held strong from that point.

Hayden pitched a complete game, improving to 5-1 on the year. She scattered eight hits and allowed five runs (two earned) while fanning four. Vannessa Castro took the loss for PVAMU, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings while striking out five.

D. Williams was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Pozzi and Hansell each had two hits.
