GRAMBLING, La. - The Alabama A&M University Softball team swept Grambling State during in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader, winning 16-5 in the first game and 12-0 in the second game Saturday afternoon at the GSU Softball Complex.
Alabama A&M (12-11, 4-2 SWAC) opened game one with a two-run shot from Ariel Smith, but Grambling State cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the frame as Allye Hartley drove in Hailey Haynes (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R).
However, the Lady Bulldogs picked up two more runs thanks to a Kia Lang single, and LaShayna Lee hit a three-run triple as AAMU exploded for a five-run third to take a 9-1 advantage into the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Tigers (8-16, 0-5 SWAC) trimmed the deficit to 9-2 with one run in the bottom of the third, but Danielle Hansell (3-for-3, 3 R, 4 RBI) hit a two-run triple as Alabama A&M plated four in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Tia Coleman hit a three-run homer for Grambling in the fifth, but the Lady Tigers weren't able to put together any other offense as AAMU cruised to the win. D'Maria Matthews (2-7) took the loss as she gave up 16 runs on 11 hits, with six walks and one strikeout in five innings. Imani Largin picked up the win with five runs (three earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.
In the second game, Alabama A&M overwhelmed Grambling early on, as Smith and Jamia Kirk each hit two-run home runs, and Hansell added a two-run double as the Lady Bulldogs tacked on nine runs in the first inning. Tiana Sanders hit two doubles in the frame, driving in three runs with the hits.
The Lady Bulldogs scored one in the second and added two more in the fifth for the 12-0 win. Lauren Hayden (7-1) picked up the victory in 5.0 innings.
