Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader against Alcorn State

HUNTSVILLE, Al--- Bulldogs baseball opened up their series against Alcorn State on Friday afternoon splitting a doubleheader losing 15-4 and winning 11-1. The series finale has been moved up to 12 p.m. Saturday.

Game one: Alcorn State 15, AAMU 4
Alcorn State pushed across 15 runs on 18 hits with two errors while limiting the Bulldogs to four runs on 10 hits with two errors.

Carlos Lopez earned the win for Alcorn, surrendering three earned runs and striking out seven in five innings of work. Jose Figueroa got the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing nine hits, while walking three and striking out two in five innings.

The Bulldogs started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Carson McGregory singled to left field, advancing JT O'Reel and scoring Jonathan Smith II. McGregory then doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the third to score Dalton Mitchell to give AAMU a 2-0 lead.

The Braves answered with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.  

The Bulldogs pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth with doubles from Smith and Carlton Peppers. Alcorn scored at least one run in every inning from the 5th on, putting the game out of reach for the Bulldogs. The Braves took the game 15-4 in eight innings.

Game two: AAMU 11, Alcorn State 1
The Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits en route to an 11-1 win over the Braves. The Bulldogs were bolstered by a strong start from Jalen Pearson and a four-hit game from O'Reel.

The Bulldogs got on board first in the ballgame thanks to a three-run first inning. O'Reel opened the frame with a single to the left-side and Smith scored on an error. Mitchell singled through the left side to plate Peppers. After Tyus O'Neal-El grounded into double play, Richard Polinsky singled to the right side to plate O'Reel, taking the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Alabama A&M added to its lead. Joannes Diaz doubled to right center and advanced to third on an error. With one out, Smith doubled to left center to score Diaz. Peppers homered to left field to plate Smith, followed by a triple from O'Reel. Mitchell doubled to left center to score O'Reel and a 2 RBI homer from O'Neal-El put the Bulldogs up, 9-0.  

The Braves got on board in the top of the sixth with a double to left center.

The Bulldogs continued their offense in the sixth and seventh frame thanks to a Braves pass ball that scored Peppers and a single from Smith to plate Parker to make it 11-1 in favor of Alabama A&M.

On the hill, Pearson (2-1) was solid for the Bulldogs. The freshman allowed three hits and two walks over five innings to claim his second win of the season.
